Flipnote Studio DSi Review

Flipnote Studio
Flipnote Studio is a DSi-only program that can be downloaded as of 8/14/09. The DSi-ware store finally has something good to offer, and it's free. Flipnote studio is a program that lets you create animations frame-by-frame and post them so that anyone can see.
The Flipnote icon is a little frog. When you first start a project you are presented with a blank canvas. You can make whatever you want. While it seems simple at first, draw with the stylus, the game gets very deep. You have two layers on which to draw. There are onion skins (light lines that show you what you drew on the last frame) and a copy button that makes what you draw stay for the next frames. One con is that there are only three colors, black, red and blue. Animations can be as long as you want and there are 8 different speeds at which you can play them.
You can also put sound in your animation and choose where to play it. You can record a soundtrack for the whole animation, and 3 that you can play whenever you want. One trick I found is that if you record your voice at a slow speed (like 2 or 3) then speed it up (to 5 or 6) it sounds like a chipmunk! You can also use your camera to make animations!
When you submit your animation online you tap channels. Then you tap whichever channel you want. You then tap description and then tap submit. Many people can see your animation! You can also look at some of the other amazing work people have done. You can give it stars and even comment on someone's animation!
The program makes it really easy to make an animation, and have a lot of fun!
Score:
9.5 Highly Recommended

I really like FlipNote Studio, but I find it really disappointing that there is only three colors besides black, and that you can only use 2 at a time. Why couldn't they have added a couple more, like green and orange at least? And while I like the layering and all, I wish you could use more than two at a time. Oh well, maybe a more sophisticated paint-type application will be made eventually for the DSi, or maybe for the 3Dsi?
